This Act aims at the preservation of Korean cultural and natural heritages. Cultural heritage may be classified as tangible cultural heritage (buildings, pictures, etc.), intangible cultural heritage (music, craft skills, etc.), historic sites, scenic sites, animals, plants geological features, etc.
The Act provides for the establishment of the Cultural Heritage Committee and defines its internal composition. The Committee s functions, which are provided for in detail in the Act, include: the designation of State-designated cultural heritage assets; designation of a protective facility or protective zone for any State-designated cultural heritage asset; recognition of a holder or a holding organization of any outstanding intangible cultural heritage asset; and issuance of an order to perform substantial repair works or restoration of any State-designated cultural heritage asset.
The Act further provides for the establishment of a Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation and for penal provisions.
